A Special Day!
Today we are taking a closer look at the 4th commandment, found in found in Exodus 20:8–11, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
The God of the Universe set aside a very special day. In fact, this is a day that He tells us to celebrate not just once a year but every single week.
Do you remember when this day was first instituted? In Genesis 2:2, 3 we read, “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” God had just finished a long week of creating…but unlike you and me, He wasn’t tired. Yet, He chose to set aside a day to rest as an example to us. But it wasn’t just for any kind of rest—there was a special purpose to this day. The verse says that God blessed the seventh day—Saturday—and sanctified it.
So, how did the majority of the Christian world end up worshipping on the 1st day of the week—Sunday—instead of the 7th day of the week—Saturday—which God specified as the day set aside as holy? Daniel 7:25 identifies a power that would “…speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws.”
They acknowledge their attempt to change God’s law. Peter Geirmann, in the book The Converts Catechism, wrote, “We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church, in the Council of Laodicea (364 A.D.) transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.” The verse in Daniel 7 said that they would “think to change times and laws.” That means that they would not be able to truly “change” God’s law even though they’d think they had done so.
God gave us six days to complete all the work we have to do and He is asking us to spend the seventh day with Him, following His example. He instructs us to not do any work on this day, but rather focus on building our relationship with Him and worshipping together with other faithful believers in preparation for that earth made new where we will fellowship each Sabbath with Jesus and the angels face-to-face.
